At once reverent and daring, The Book of Enoch, Vol. 1 is pianist, composer, and bandleader Enoch Smith Jr.’s deeply personal exploration of faith, loss, and renewal through the language of jazz. Drawing on the spirit of the Black church and the improvisational freedom of modern jazz, the album transforms sacred standards and heartfelt originals into a journey of hope and healing.
Each track tells a story. From the fiery opening “Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho” to the reflective calm of “A Quiet Place,” Smith reshapes familiar spirituals with harmonic richness and rhythmic imagination. His original composition “Gracefully,” inspired by “Amazing Grace,” captures the essence of redemption and resilience, while “Mitch’s Moves” pays tribute to the late Parris Bowens—friend, mentor, and musical brother—whose influence is felt throughout the record.
The album’s emotional core was born out of the Jazz Vespers services Smith has led for years—worship experiences where the music itself becomes the sermon. That sacred-meets-swing aesthetic pulses through every note, carried by a dynamic ensemble whose interplay feels both prayerful and alive.
The Book of Enoch, Vol. 1 isn’t just a collection of songs—it’s a meditation on grace, community, and the power of music to speak when words fall short. It bridges Sunday morning and Saturday night, the sanctuary and the stage, inviting listeners to feel something timeless and true.
